Noise in open-plan offices is a major public health issue as revealed by indicators of sick leave and field surveys in France and abroad. For about a decade, the author has been conducting research in the Laboratory of Occupational Acoustics of INRS on sound mechanisms that contribute to the dissatisfaction of employees of open-plan offices. This research led him to analyse the physical factors of noise and the specific role of the workplace itself as well as human factors and their great variability. The purpose of this document is to review the most recent results obtained at INRS as well as in other research laboratories working on noise in open-plan offices. These results are always observed in the light of their contribution to the field of occupational risk prevention.
