Sustainable prevention of MSDs : new challenges for research and practice

From 5 to 7 May 2026 at the Centre Prouvé in Nancy, the INRS organised an international conference dedicated to the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in an ever-changing world of work. The event brought together nearly 260 participants from 16 countries. The aim of the conference was to highlight the wealth and diversity of knowledge and multidisciplinary approaches relating to the prevention of MSDs.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a major occupational health issue. For several decades, they have been one of the leading causes of occupational diseases and workplace accidents in most countries, as well as a factor contributing to people leaving the labour market.
Developments such as remote working, sedentary lifestyles, platformisation, new technologies, new forms of employment, work and organisation, changing interactions within workgroups, the diversity of the workforce and workers’ new aspirations are constantly reshaping the dynamics surrounding the onset of MSDs.
At the same time, these changes are influencing the practices of researchers and professionals in the field. The roles involved in prevention and the profiles of those involved are evolving. These changes, combined with the use of emerging technologies, are enhancing the capacity to collect and analyse data on human activity, whilst redefining modes of collaboration and methods of intervention.
The aim of this conference was to highlight the richness and diversity of knowledge and multidisciplinary approaches relating to the prevention of MSDs. Nearly 260 participants involved in MSD prevention – including researchers, experts, practitioners and business representatives – attended the three-day conference.
