This report is the first of a series of three INRS Technical and Scientific Notes dedicated to accident prevention in SMEs. It includes two parts :<br/>
- the first part exposes the criteria for the quantitative and qualitative definitions of just what constitutes an SME that are normally encountered in the relevant literature. This contributes to the clarification of the general context of the study ;<br/>
- the second part presents a set of contributions to accident prevention in SMEs. Different types of documents examined here, including testimonials, appeals, summaries, practical guides, monographs, and research works. This summary can be used to gain a working knowledge of the concepts and results available in this area.<br/>
The results of a study carried out on approximately one hundred small establishments or firms (Report 2), and the methodological approaches and techniques used (Report 3) are present in the two other reports of the series.<br/>
