A tool to assist exposure assessment to aerosols and other chemical and biological agents

The INRS has made available in 2023 a tool (available at http://www.inrs.fr/outil110) that provides descriptive information on airborne exposure levels by work situation to 626 chemical substances such as particulates and volatile organic compounds. Work situations can be characterized by a combination of ten variables including task, industry, and local exhaust ventilation. The exposure data is sourced from the Colchic database, which collects workplace measurements in France since 1987. An update in 2025 has added exposure data for 19 biological agents (bacteria, molds, toxins) based on <br/>
13 182 measurements. While the tool was initially developed to assist in workplace risk assessments, it can also be useful to occupational physicians and to the aerosol research community for guidance on which aerosols can be found in workplaces and what concentration levels can be expected based on available measurement data.
