Field comparison of aerosol mass concentrations measured with 6 photometers in a linen scutching factory

Because of their ability to measure short-term fluctuations, photometers are increasingly used for real-time aerosol characterization in workplace atmospheres. Despite the need for a custom calibration factor to obtain more accurate mass concentration data in a specific working area, such a gravimetric comparison is rarely implemented and hygienists use raw data most of the time. This work, carried out in a linen scutching factory, aimed to compare the real-time dust mass concentrations measured by 6 photometers. All the studied instruments provided relevant information on the qualitative evolution of real-time mass concentration and allowed a better understanding of work situations. Photometers based on DRX technology constitute, in this field investigation, the most suitable instruments for the quantitative monitoring of coarse linen scutching dust. The other instruments present more or less marked underestimations which would require correction of the raw signal using calibration factor between 2 and >10, depending on the photometer considered.
