Auditory fatigue and risks for hearing in amplified music professionals

The literature shows that musicians are exposed to high noise levels and frequently suffer hearing loss. However, very few studies have looked at the exposure of other professionals working in areas where amplified music is played. In order to assess the risks for this category of professionals, INRS conducted a field study with concert hall technicians, security guards and barmen under real working conditions, combining activity analyses, noise exposure measurements and hearing measurements. Particular attention was paid to hearing fatigue caused by the working day. This study argues in favour of better integration of the prevention of hearing risk among intermittent workers and advocates for the consideration of all hearing disorders in the occupational health monitoring of those professionals.
