Optimization of the measurement method for airborne endotoxins in workplace atmospheres: validation in the field

Endotoxins, compounds found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, can pose a health risk to workers if inhaled. In workplaces, activities such as water jet cleaning or compost turning can lead to airborne endotoxins. In 2005, INRS proposed a method to measure endotoxins in the workplace atmosphere. However, evolution in knowledges and user observations have led INRS to conduct new research to simplify and optimize the method. The influence of the type of collection filter, sample storage and the use of an alternative method were studied in the field to validate the results observed in laboratory. The results obtained make it possible to provide an optimized and simplified measurement method.
