Report on the symposium on the risks and resources of emotional labour

An international symposium entitled "Risks and resources of emotional work. News, Issues for prevention, theoretical and methodological perspectives" was held in May 2022 in Lyon (France). Organized at the Universit Lumi re Lyon 2 with the financial and scientific support of the GIS GESTES (Scientific Interest Group on Work and Occupational Health), the INRS (National Institute for Research and Safety for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases) and the Max Weber Center (UMR 5283), the aim of this conference was to discuss the concept of emotional labor, its contributions and its limitations with regard to occupational health. In a context of development of service activities where emotional skills are appreciated as a source of regulation of sensitive situations and of performance, and while emotional demands have been among the top psychosocial risk factors for the last ten years (Gollac et al., 2011), it seemed interesting for prevention to take stock of the scope of the concept, which is also the subject of notable publications this year in France (Burnay (coord.), 2022 and Bercot, Jeantet, Tcholakova (2021)). The conference was multidisciplinary. It was organized over two days with five thematic workshops framed by the intervention of two major witnesses (M. Loriol in the opening session and D. Lhuillier in the conclusion) and punctuated by a round table bringing together specialists in the subject from the main disciplines involved (sociology, psychology, ergonomics, management). The call for papers circulated in 2021 resulted in a selection of about fifteen speakers gathered in five workshops. The conference, which was open to the public online, brought together more than 200 people over the two days.
