Bioaerosol exposure during sorting of municipal solid, commercial and industrial waste: concentration levels, size distribution, and biodiversity of airborne fugal

A study was carried out at a waste sorting centre in France processing dry recyclable household waste and dry recyclable commercial and industrial waste. The aim was to study exposure to bioaerosols and dust. The results confirm that waste and waste sorting activities are sources of airborne fungi. Airborne fungal communities were dominated by the genus Penicillium, both in bioaerosols and in deposited dust samples, followed by the genera Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Wallemia, Mucor and Rhizopus. The results concerning the size distribution and biodiversity of bioaerosols suggest that employees are exposed to complex bioaerosols in the course of their work and make it possible to establish a more detailed diagnosis of the risks involved, which is often difficult in the absence of OELs for bioaerosols in general.
