Endocrine disruptors in the workplace and reproduction in human: need for epidemiological studies and priorities
Publication
In 2012, INRS led a reflection on the need of epidemiological studies in the workplace and the identification of priority endocrine disruptor substances (EDS). From literature review, a list of 14 substances or substance class was established. A state of knowledge was carried out for each class of substances and used to build an approach of prioritization. From responses to 9 criteria (three levels of quotation), scores were calculated and a proposed ranking of EDS. It appears in first position: phthalates (plastic industry). Also, substances particularly used in cosmetic sector (Paraben, 4-nonylphenol, UV filter, Phthalate) and Bisphenol A are identified as relevant molecules to study as a priority. Note that potentially the number of exposed workers in these different occupational sectors is large (in France about 300 000 workers). EDS have been little studied in the workplace.
