Risk taking, "inattention" and other negligent acts

Publication

The text includes two parts.

In the first part, after discussing the specificity of risk taking in the work place, itsÊdifferent components are examined : danger, the worker, and the circumstances likely to join them together.
Risk taking is thus an expression of very different types of behaviour, and depends on whether there is a situation in which the danger is very obvious, a situation where it is incidental, or a situation where there are only minimal risks. In this last case, theÊconcept of "inattention" is present.

In the second part, the different means of inciting the workers to behave correctly by - theoretically - presenting them with only those ideas that directly influence each of them.
The rule, information, propaganda (especially safety contests) and value management, or "ideological control" are analysed in terms of processes of influence.

In conclusion, risk taking is seen as the result of a confrontation between the technical requirements of a working situation and different methods of reasoning.
